Hello, my name is Mark

I am excited to announce that I have been called to become the next Lead Pastor at Peninsula Covenant Church, in Redwood City, CA beginning in January of 2024!

I am a Biblically-focused leader, preacher, and teacher with over two decades of experience shepherding all generations, equipping believers to grow in their faith, and skillfully training people to guide others to Christ relationally. I am wholly committed to motivating people in their faith walk and encouraging them passionately to pursue Christ’s mission together with a clear vision and sense of purpose. I am well-versed in pastoral care, disciple-making, change management, and steering congregations to becoming more missionally relevant.

I am blessed to be married to my wonderful wife Stephanie. We have two amazing children, Becket (13), and Evie (11). I love to fish with friends--especially for Northern Pike in Canada. I also enjoy playing guitar, drums, and singing (poorly). In recent years I picked up martial arts to exercise with my kids--and somehow I'm now a blue belt. After Sunday services I almost always take a "pastor nap," unless the Cleveland Browns are playing (and likely losing).

EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE

2019-2023

Lead Pastor

Bay Presbyterian Church, EPC

Bay Village, OH (1100 members, 45 staff)

Responded to God's call to help rebuild my home church after it experienced a very traumatic season.

  • Served as a solo pastor for one year, hired 12 new, talented and ethnically diverse staff who stabilized and revived the church.

  • When I arrived, BPC was over $100,000 in debt.  Now BPC has  one full-year in reserve for a 3 million dollar annual budget

  • Led the church to plant a multi-ethnic, inner city church in the midst of Covid that now is thriving and financially stable with 150 weekly attendees.  www.TheBridgeCity.Church

  • Resisting pressure to sell our urban campus,  I led the effort to revitalize and rebrand BridgeCLE.org, our mission outreach in urban Cleveland.  BridgeCLE now is financially stable and connects hundreds of people with resources to those who have needs every week.

  • Skillfully guided the church through Covid and its many challenges--including race.  In partnership with African-American Presbyterians in Cleveland, we formed Christ-centered, multi-ethnic small group discussions on race that over 100 people have attended--and growing.

  • Personally recruited a team of 12, and led a trip to Guatemala.  This trip has now has become an annual disciple-making effort.

  • Hired dynamic staff and established a partnership with Young Life that revitalized our youth ministry, going from 20 teens a week to over 75, and 70 students to camp each year.

  • Further developed and grew our disabilities ministry by encouraging greater community participation and securing  denominational endorsement of KeyMinistry.org, which was founded out of our church.

2011-2019

Senior Pastor

Christ Community Church, ECO

Milpitas, CA (1200 members, 42 staff)

Transitioned a very multi-ethnic church from a programmatic model to a disciple-making model, equipping members to stand strong in Silicon Valley in the midst of increased resistance toward Christianity.

  • 6x recipient of Best Pastor in Milpitas and 6x Best Church in Milpitas as voted by San Jose Mercury News

  • Catapulted small group participation to more than 50% of the congregation.

  • Led the church to become more missionally relevant, catalyzing a very ethnically diverse  congregation to reach out to its neighbors through relational evangelism.

  • Broke down siloes and introduced staff accountability.

  • Raised nearly $4M above our regular operating budget through two successful capital campaigns.

  • Spearheaded the use of new technologies, in staff management, worship, and social media.

  • Steered the transition with minimal factions from PCUSA to ECO.

  • Founded and led MilpitasCares.org, a highly successful, multi-church, community-wide annual outreach.

  • Served on the Presbytery leadership council of Bluewater Presbytery as chair of church planting and renewal.

  • Breakout speaker at ECO National gathering for multi-ethnic outreach, 2016 and 2017.

  • Forged a missional partnership with Western Seminary that brought income to the church and training for our leaders.

BELIEFS

I Believe in One God in Three Persons

I believe in God the Father, the Almighty, sovereign maker of all things, seen and unseen, including humanity, who is made in the image and likeness of God, male and female. Through the freedom of our own will, humanity disobeyed God and fell from a state of innocence. Yet, despite our fall, God continues to love creation—especially sinful humanity, and even a sinner like me! Although humanity has turned its back on God, God continues to extend to us a covenant relationship of grace.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten Son of the Father; God from God, light from light, very God of very God. All things were made through the Son. For us and our salvation the Son became incarnate through the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary. He was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered, died and was buried. On the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures, He rose again in bodily form. He ascended to heaven retaining our humanity and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He now intercedes for us as our Great High Priest. He is Lord of All, Savior, Redeemer, and Head of the Church. No one comes to the Father except through the Son. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, the Spirit is worshiped and glorified. The Spirit has spoken through the prophets and inspired the Old and New Testaments. These are the Word of God, the infallible truth, and articulate God’s means of salvation. At Pentecost the Spirit formed the one, holy, apostolic, and universal Church as a continuation of God’s covenant with Israel. The Spirit continues to form and guide the Church through the Scriptural witness. The Spirit continues to convict the world of its sinful condition. Particularly through the apostolic witness of the Church, the Spirit summons us to participate in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. Having been baptized into Christ’s death through grace, we are called to participate in Christ’s life by faith, exhibiting our union with Christ and one another—person to person, male with female, old to young, ethnicity to ethnicity, nation with nation. At the Lord’s command and as a sign of our reconciliation in Christ, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Through our participation in the two sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, God seals believers in the covenant of grace, renews our identity as His people, and marks us for service. As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to live as witnesses to the world of God’s love by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ for the salvation of humankind, promoting the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God, maintaining divine worship, preserving the truth, promoting social righteousness, and exhibiting the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. I look forward with the Church to the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Rick and Debbie M.

Thank you for the leadership and stability that you have provided Bay Presbyterian Church over the past 4 years.  You arrived at BPC a lone pastor with the task of rebuilding from the ground floor...You have placed BPC in a position of strength and stability.  Perhaps most importantly you provided biblical preaching and practical application that are transforming our members.

Denise Z.

You have been an incredible leader during these most difficult of times...Your sermons brought tears to my eyes so often--touched my heart and strengthened and renewed my faith.

Kelli M.

You have led the congregation [at Bay Presbyterian Church] with vision, grace, innovation, and most importantly, an obvious love for the Lord.  Your Sunday messages have challenged me and inspired great discussions in our small group, as well.

Sharon M.

I moved to Cleveland 3 months after my husband died.  When you arrived at BPC you encouraged everyone to get into community groups.  I thought, "it's only for a few weeks."  I'm still in that group!

John E.

Thank you for how you ministered to my family and me, especially after Carrie passed away.  And for always making my family feel welcomed at church when they returned home to visit.

Brooke H.

My sister and I have always had a turbulent relationship...one Sunday you preached on Matthew 7:3-5.  Thank you.  That sermon alone reparied years of anger for me.
